Action learning sets evaluation

1st August 2020

Action learning sets (ALS) are often used to inspire organisation change, with groups working together across several sessions to address real issues.

Whilst part of KSS AHSN, the team evaluated a seven-month action learning programme, which aimed to support the development of collaborative leadership skills across emerging primary care networks (PCNs) within Surrey and Sussex.

The programme, supported by Alliance for Better Care, consisted of a series of six ALS sessions, facilitated and led by consultants from The King’s Fund. Multidisciplinary groups worked towards a mutual objective which would support the organisational development of their PCN, while developing collaborative leadership.

The team utilised various methods of data capture, including questionnaires, interviews, and observation of sessions. The approach yielded strong results, with effective relationships being developed and teams making great progress:

  • 100% felt that ALS enabled open and honest conversations
  • 100% felt that ALS helped the group to reflect upon, and resolve, emerging issues
  • 94% felt the project had helped establish a stronger network
  •  72% felt the project helped deliver their general leadership skills

Impact:

Our analysis provided evidence of the positive benefits of the ALS sessions, which aided development of effective relationships and supported one group to procure substantial funding for a new way of working.
